Current view of Technology-final post

Technology is very important! As we have all learned this semester, there is tons of different technology tools that we can use in our future classrooms! I feel that it is very important to incorporate technology into early childhood. This could be done by using computers, digital cameras, scanners, leap frogs, smart boards, etc. Technology helps get the students more involved and the more involved they are the more they learn!
I want to go back to my first post though when I said that it is still important for students to be able to survive without technology. I still agree with this. Technology is great, but what if you are stranded somewhere and your laptop battery is dead? no electric? You should be able to know basic skills to help you survive. I feel that technology is a great tool that should be utilized by all people, but it should not control them, there is more to life!

Blog Post #11 non computer technology

I think cameras are a great tool to use in school. This could include anything for digital cameras to video cameras to even the regular disposable cameras. There are hundreds of lesson plans you could create using cameras. Examples: classroom scrapbook- full of pictures of children through out the year doing different activities; at the preschool/toddler age you could make a poster of how to wash your hands correctly and use pictures to show each step; great for science lessons- take pictures and have children label different parts of animals and plants; and you could also have the children take pictures and then show them how to develop the film!

Blog Post #10 ERIC Reflection

After hearing several presentations, I have realized how much technology is really going to have an impact over my future classroom! There were so many ideas and topics presented. The most interesting thing though for me is the digital divide. I feel that that will be a issue for me when I begin teaching. We have learned so much in this class about technology and using it in our future classrooms, but what if we don't have that option? What if I end up teaching it a school that has very limited technology and computers from like the early 1990's?

Obviously, the students will be behind in technology. How do you teach them about technology then? I mean it is obviously a huge part of society now days, so how do we prepare the students for higher education and job placement if they are so behind?

Also if the kids are behind, we can only imagine how far behind in the technology world their parents are. I know my brother and I were having a conversation about the Internet and blogging and I overheard my mom say to my dad " I feel so lost, I have no idea what they are talking about!" and my parents are middle class!

The digital divide is real and if we want our students to survive in the world, we need to help them bridge the gap!

Blog Post #9

4Teachers.org works to help you integrate technology into your classroom by offering online tools and resources. This site helps teachers locate and create ready-to-use Web lessons, quizzes, rubrics and classroom calendars. There are also tools for student use. Discover valuable professional development resources addressing issues such as equity, ELL, technology planning, and at-risk or special-needs students. (This is the description on the website)

Overall I feel that this is a very good website! I feel that this website would be very useful to teachers that may or may not have a lot if experience with technology. One feature of this site that I really liked were the success stories for real teachers sharing their ideas and experiences with using technology in their classrooms. Overall I would rate this as a great resource for teachers!

#7-Half-Way Reflection

I have to admit this class really scared me at first, but now as I look back on what I have learned this semester it is truly amazing! Even though the imovie was a little frustrating I feel that it was well worth it and I think it would be a great project to do in my future classroom. I think it would be neat to make one at the end of the school year . The movie could show pictures of the children throughout the year making artwork, going on field trips, etc. You could then give every child a copy to take home and share with their families!

A great website for kids- 4kids.org

#6- Interent use in the Elementary Classroom (part 1 and 2)

I feel that there are many pros and cons to using the Internet inside of an Elementary classroom. It is very important to introduce computers and the Internet to children at a young age since the world revolves around computers today. The Internet has some wonderful sites that young children can navigate all by themselves. My favorite is 4kids.org. this website allows children to play free educational games! The only thing that bothers me about Internet usage is that there needs to be guidance from the teachers and the parents (if it is to be used at home); this is very appropriate to ensure that children are not using inappropriate websites!

Kindergarten Standards

I think the having standards for Kindergarten is for the most part a good thing. Teachers should have an idea of what they are expected to teach their students. There is one thing that bothers me about this though, and that is the fact that some Kindergarten students might not be ready to learn all of the standards! Some of the children may have gone to preschool and are pretty comfortable with a school setting; however, there might be some students who have never even set foot in a school before! It may be harder for those students to adjust and learn all that is required by the end of the school year!

Images in Education

These pictures could be used in a science lesson about what living things need in order to survive. You could ask the students questions like: List 3 things that both the flowers and the horses need to live and Is there anything that horses need to survive that plants don't?
Then have the students search the Internet for three websites that they could use to answer the questions.
This would be good for third graders. It teaches them science information and helps them learn to use the Internet for research!

This image could be used in a fun Language Arts lesson! This lesson could be appropriate for all ages, but would have to be adapted for each age group.

Preschool- Show the children the picture of the elephant. Ask them if they know what the animal is. Then ask them to draw a picture of their very own elephant. Once the children have each drawn their pictures, then have them explain to you what the elephant is thinking. Write down their responses on the back of their picture. This is a great way to get the children thinking and a great way to allow them to show off their creativity!

Third graders- Show them the picture of the elephant. Then ask them to make a pre-writing web of the different things that the elephant might be thinking of. Once they have made the web of possibilites, have them begin writing a story using some of their ideas created in their web. This lesson is a good way for students to learn about pre-writing and writing skills, while being able to show off their creativty!

Blog Post #2

Howard Gardner formulated a list of seven (now eight) intelligences. Those consisiting of Linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and now most recently naturalistic.Gardner believes that people have a unique blend of intelligences. He believes that the intelligencies rarely operate independently, that in fact they are used at the same time and tend to complement each other as peole develop skills or solve problems. According to Gardner, these intelligences are amoral, they can be put to constructive or destructive use .

I feel that Gardner's Multiple Intelligencies supports technology intergration for learning in an early elementary classroom. Gardner's theory can relate to all three types of technology since people each have their own blend of intelligencies. Type I helps the teacher be a better teacher. The teacher can use specific software that will support objectives being learned. If a teacher has a student that learns better by musical activites then the teacher could find software to support the students way of learning. Type II relates to Gardner's theory because the computer can be used as a tool to enhance the skills within Gardner's Intelligences. Type III is supported by this theory due to the fact that people that are good in a certain intelligence like Logical-mathmatical can use the computer to solve problems.

A man named Edgar Dole, who is often called the father of modern media in education, developed the "cone of experience" based on his observations involving teaching and learning. Dale's cone of experience is a tool that teachers can use to make decisions about which activities to use in their classrooms that would help their students get the most from each lesson.

I feel that Dale's cone of Experience supports technology intergration for learning in an early elementary classroom. The reason I feel this way has to do with how Dale's cone of experience can relate to the three types of technology. Computer technogloy can be used to activily engage the learner. Type I technology is supported by Dale's cone because the teacher can become a better teacher by using Dale's cone to choose the best technology choices to enhance student learning. Type II is supported because students can use the computer as a tool to enhance their experiences which will result in the student recalling more of the lesson. Type III is supported because at the bottom of Dale's cone in order to achieve 90% memory of an experience a person must design and/or perform a presentation. Type III technology can help a person do this.

In 1956, Bengjamin Bloom developed levels of intellectual behavior involved in learning, this is called Bloom's Taxonomy. He developed three overlapping domains which include cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Within the cognitive domain he developed six levels. These domains and levels are helpfull in developiong critical thinking skills in our students.

I feel that Bloom's Taxonomy supports technology integration for learing in an early elementary classroom.Bloom's Taxonomy can relate to all three types of technology. Type I can be used to help a student master Bloom's lst level of cognitive domain which is knowledge. Type II can be used as a tool to help a student master the next level which is comprehension. Type III is supported because the computer can be used in the last 4 levels (application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation).

About me

Hello My name is Ashley. I am from Fostoria, Ohio and I am 24 years old. I have been married for 3 years and have loved every minute of it! We have two dogs and two rabbits. I enjoy swimming, jet skiing, boating, water skiing, scrapbooking, shopping, watching movies, listening to music, and just being with my husband and our families!!
I am here because it is required for my major and I admit I am very nervous about this class! I hope to learn more about computers and how I can use them to teach my future students! I also want to learn about Mac. I also am interested in buying a lap top and I hope that this class will help me decide between a Mac and a Dell.
At this point I understand that using technology as a learning tool is important; however, I also feel that as a society we have to know how to live without technology too! I want to give my students a variety of experiences using both technology and real life. I want my students to be able to use a calculator or a computer to add and subtract, but I also want them to be able to add and subtract without technology as well!
